I want doesn’t get!
There were some dodgy sayings floating about when I was younger, a lot of which didn’t make much sense to me at the time.
I did honestly believe my eyes would change shape if I sat too close to the TV. I didn’t ever want to eat certain foods for the fear I would grow hair on my chest, or my hair would turn curly. I hated burnt toast but it might have helped me to sing better (not all the burnt toast in the world would help – this doesn’t stop me singing though). I was petrified to cry on a stormy day in case I was left with a permanent frown and and when Mum said so! I knew that was then end of discussion. I could go on and on! Please share any favourites you have below in the comments
One phrase my Mum used often was, I want doesn’t get.
Yeah, this one kinda stumped me, and for sure left me with the mind set of, if you wanted something you shouldn’t ask for it.
Now figure this out, how do you get what you want with out asking??… it’s a challenge, alright!
I just recently celebrated my 40th Birthday, yeah!!! And as much as I do absolutely love surprises, I love the kind of surprises I like…eek!! In some areas I have very specific taste, and not always common. So I decided that if anyone were to ask what I wanted. I would be prepared and have ideas in my head ready to list suggestions to avoid any unwanted gifts.
I could hear my Mum’s voice in my head rhyming I want doesn’t get, but how else was I to get the things I wanted instead of things I probably wouldn’t like?!
And I did! And I was spoilt rotten – Thank you everyone
So here is the thing, I have other things I want.
I’ll include the gift list below… ha ha, no just kidding.
But there really are some things in life I want!
I want to be slimmer, I want to be able to manage my finances better , I want to a more patient person, I want to learn to run, I want to be more organised, I want to be more disciplined with my journaling, I want to be more intentional about spending quality time daily reading the Bible, I want to be a better friend and follow up on texts, I want to stop wasting time on social media, I want to take better care of my skin with a daily regime. I want, I want, I want …
As I was mulling over the I wants in my head, that old familiar saying sounded off in my thoughts, I WANT DOESN’T GET.
As I let it rest for a while, the light finally dawned. I WANT DOESN’T GET because I WANT is not enough. Amen!!! The penny has dropped and this silly old phrase suddenly does make sense.
We can scream, demand and throw all the temper tantrums like a child demanding sweets in the supermarket all we want, but simply wanting something is just not enough.
We can WANT till our heart’s content but unless we are willing to take action to do something about it… I want is just not enough.
Now obviously there is a certain amount of moral integrity and wisdom needed when applying this theory to your life.
I want that man, but he is married to some one else does not mean take action and go get him. It means take action and address your issues over lusting for married men!
I want that Gucci handbag, but can’t afford it, means either buy a cheap high street copy or save your butt off until you can afford it. Not go out and steal it.
But these other things…
I want to be slimmer, well cut out junk, exercise, join a sliming club. TAKE ACTION
I want to stop wasting time on social media. Come on! Delete the app, deactivate. Put you phone away. To break a habit, TAKE ACTION.
I want to get better with my managing my money … seek help? (Lots of help with budgeting out there now). Stop impulse buying. Set up a savings DD! TAKE ACTION.
I WANT DOESN’T GET because
I want has to be intentional
I want has to be disciplined
I want has to be held accountable
I want takes work
This is no different when it comes to matters of the heart
If we want a better relationship, we need to work at it. All the wanting in the world won’t make your relationship good, you have got to work at it.
Our relationship with God is the same. All the wanting in the world is not going to keep you close to God and build and strengthen you relationship with him. Quick note, God has already done his part… it’s up to us to do our part too.
We will need to be intentional about reading the Word and getting to know and understand his heart for us. A relationship of any kind won’t work if you don’t make time to spend with the person to get to know them, love them, talk to them, grow with them.
That’s why it’s essential to read the Bible and spend time in prayer. Go to church, listen to podcasts. Even journal your thoughts for the times you forget.
The same way a friend phones and speaks words of comfort to us in a time of crisis, God’s words speak over us in our time of stress & uncertainty. But we have to actually read or hear them first. The type of peace that comes from God is like no other. The Bible tells us it surpasses all understanding, and it does!
“Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:7 NLT
We have to be disciplined about the things that take our attention off God and onto other things. Now I’m sorry if this cuts a little but I think it’s meant to. If I had a penny for every time I heard, I just don’t have time, I’m so busy, myself included…
Well missy, you weren’t too busy to scroll through FB for the past half hour, you weren’t too busy when you sat binge watching the whole entire Friends box set before you watched the reunion last week, you weren’t too busy to sit gossiping on the phone for an hour last night. Make time, make time, make TIME. Even if you have to set your alarm a bit earlier… Stop allowing other things to take priority over God. He is your priority. In everything!
“Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” Matthew 6:33 NLT
And we have to be accountable for our behaviour. You can’t run round willy nilly following every latest fad or trend, blowing in the wind, then expect to have a steadfast, solid relationship with God. He has given us the guidelines and the Holy Spirit is on hand to interpret for us and guide us. We are going to need to honour what he has laid out before us to live our best life. Yes, there will be behaviours and toxic traits that affect our closeness to God. I reiterate, this will not be God withholding it. We will withdraw it from him, because that nasty, dirty, pathetic, good for nothing worm from Eden still chants in our ear. God is keeping all the fun from us, that there are better more fun things to do. More power, more knowledge, more freedom, The world tells us the same. Do this, do that, this is acceptable behaviour, this has to be tolerated, you have to accommodate that, you should think like us. If we WANT to build and strengthen our relationship with our Heavenly Father, we have to take action to act and behave in line with his Word. Not in line with the world… and that is tough!! It takes effort, it takes accountability, it takes strength… all of which God help us with.
“Don’t copy the behaviour and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.”Romans 12:2 NLT
I want doesn’t get because I want is not enough!
I wants needs to be willing to be, I will. I will put down my phone and pick up the Bible, I will walk away from the things in my life that don’t honour God, I will be disciplined in going to church even if I’ve got into the habit of watching on TV in my pj’s, I will stop making excuses and make new priorities. I will, I will, I will. Because I want, I want, I want, but more so I need that relationship and closeness to my God.
