Have you ever wished God would just plonk down on the end of your bed and give you a straight answer to whatever your heart is wrestling with? Have you ever wished that God would give you a five-year plan so that you could know the right choices to make, when to say Yes or No, when to stay put and when to walk away? Yeah?! Me too.
Don’t get me wrong, I do feel God’s presence and I see God’s goodness in so much. I get to witness his provision and protection over my family and me in the most incredible ways. I’ve seen friends make 60-mile journeys on an empty tank and with a dead battery. I’ve heard of cheques being posted through the door, for exact amounts needed, at the right time. I have had encounters where I’ve bumped into the right person and a conversation has lead to something really special. In so many ways, and through different occurrences in my week, I can say… oh that was God, oh yeah that was meant to be, thank you God, and isn’t God so good.
But equally, I have sat crying in despair. I have called out where are you, God, why aren’t you here? Why won’t you talk to me? I’ve even dared to say, why God do you allow this when I am so good and so obedient? Don’t we all have moments when we have wanted a supernatural insight into how God is going to work our catastrophic mess into a wonderful message of blessing, huh! I have had some major pity parties in God’s silence. I endured eighteen months of chronic pain and a life-altering illness and God’s only word to me was, BE STILL. Like, come on, I have to be still, I can’t do anything else but be still. Through two major surgeries, be still. Waaaa!! enough already… give me the good stuff, give me the miracle cure, the supernatural word of knowledge, the visions and dreams of a better life.. anyway you get the idea. I’m sure anyone who walks with Jesus knows he is not some magic genie that pops up every time you rub that lamp to grant you your wish.
It’s so hard to see God in adversity, equally sometimes we forget him in prosperity.
But the truth is, we are never alone, we are never out of God’s sight and his plans for our life have not suddenly been abandoned or forgotten. God is always working things in our favour.
“And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.”
Romans 8:28 NLT
I believe in these periods of silence God is calling us to a new level of understanding and trust of his character. The part where we know that, no matter what our circumstances look like on the outside, he is with us, his favour is on us and there is a move of God. The times when we are called to surrender to his will and take our hands off the steering wheel and know that God will keep us safe.
These seasons are tough, and we have a big liar enemy out there that wants to convince us that God has abandoned us that he doesn’t care for us, or that we have fallen from his favour. His mission will only be to ruin our relationship and steal our joy, the joy of knowing that God is with us, always.
Whatever your season right now, whether you’re feeling an outpouring of God’s blessings on your life, or every single day just seems to be struggle after struggle, can I encourage you to keep trusting, keep praying, keep praising, keep reading your Bible, keep taking notes… keep focused on the truth of who God is to you, a good, good Father.
Journaling is a fantastic tool to use to record the times God has shown up and look back on and be reminded of his faithfulness in your life. It also helps you avoid repeating mistakes of losing focus of dreams, or truths, from the past.
“But then I recall all you have done, O Lord; I remember your wonderful deeds of long ago. They are constantly in my thoughts. I cannot stop thinking about your mighty works.”
Psalms 77:11-12 NLT
Reading Scripture will remind you of the truth and help direct you on the right path. It allows you to learn more about God’s character and his heart for you and your life.
“All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.”
2 Timothy 3:16-17 NLT
Prayer keeps you focused and connected to God. They don’t need to be fancy or sound religious or intelligent. Some days, all I’ve managed is Help Me, but that “help me” to God is the best help I can ask for.
“Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying.”
Romans 12:12 NLT
Praise, get yourself a praise list put together on your phone, in your car, in the house, and blast it out regardless of your emotions or feelings; let those truths soak in. If you can muster it, sing out the truths, the declarations of God’s goodness. The enemy can’t stand it and he will do one!
“At the very moment they began to sing and give praise, the Lord caused the armies of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir to start fighting among themselves.”
2 Chronicles 20:22 NLT
